What you will be doing
Planning crops and replanting orchard blocks with new varieties
Planting trees
Irrigating, pruning, training, and thinning trees
Pollinating crops with bees in the spring
Spraying trees for insects and disease, and using natural pesticides and fungicides
Organizing workers to harvest fruit, and washing, sorting, and storing it
Marketing and selling fruit
Weed control, cultivation, mulching, spraying, and drainage work
What you need
Horticulture knowledge - A broad understanding of horticulture, including soils, water management, nutrition, weed control, and pest and disease management, as well as knowing the specific requirements for growing specific fruits and nuts.
Equipment and machinery skills - Be able to operate machinery and equipment safely and productively. This may include tractors, forklifts, and other farm equipment.
Harvest and post-harvest practices - Understands how to handle harvests and post-harvest activities.
Manual tasks - Perform manual tasks such as thinning, tree training, pruning, and harvesting.
Work ethic - Have a strong work ethic and be flexible. They may need to work in all weather conditions, stand for long periods, and lift up to 50 lbs. regularly.
Communication skills - Have good communication skills, as well as business and marketing skills.
Special Demands
Orchardists often work from daybreak to dusk in all four seasons, and may need to be on ladders, haul bags of fruit, drive tractors, shovel, and use natural pesticides and fungicides.
